Another Adoptive Parent Contribution

With Jan Baker taking the time to laud adoptive parents and their contributions toward the betterment of adoption in the world on her recent blog, I'm inspired to expand on the topic a bit today in support of her tribute.

Since we're without a Korean Adoption blogger at the moment, I thought I'd pass on this news about the Smithsonian Museum's launching of its Korea Gallery. Smithsonian Officially open since Friday, the 8th of June, the gallery is in the new Hall of Asian Cultures on the second floor of the museum displaying over 4,000 artifacts representing Korean history and culture.

The idea for this took root in 2003, when Korea's First... more

Making me cry ...

nests/©2006SHBenoiton I decided early this morning that today's post would be a catch-up on bits of adoption news floating around my desk. When I learned that another power cut was in the cards for a better part of the day, that settled it. Writing anything deeper without the ability to bounce around the Net researching isn't how I like to work, so a good little tidy sounded even better ... my blogging equivalent to some light dusting.

Little did I know I'd end up in tears.

As is far too often really obvious, adoptive parents get a lot... more

USCIS Fee Increase and Holidays in June

Two unrelated topics in one post! Hey! How do I do that? Why do I do that? Today, because I wanted to give the link that has all the low down on the "Final Rule" of the USCIS Application and Petition fee schedule, which also has information about the public comments collected on the proposal. It makes for interesting, if depressing, reading.

And I'm sorry to be getting to this a bit late in the month, but... more

A Baby, a Birthday and Cambodia

CjRockySam©2007SHBenoiton A baby, a birthday and an up-coming trip to Cambodia have all combined into a fearsome weight that very recently took the shape of a sack full of nickels and smacked me upside the head.

Yep. A wake-up call for Sandra, shouting down the line, "Hey, Lady! You've got some issues... more

Rocky2/©2007SHBenoiton I'm writing today on the Older Parent Blog on the new baby down here in our little valley, my assistant Cathrina's boy, Rocky, born last week.

Adoption from Taiwan: Thoughts from an adoptee

Posted by : Sandra Hanks Benoiton in International Adoption Blog at 06:30 am , 386 words, 111 views
Categories: Getting started, Adopting: the Process

An interesting thread on the forums a while back focused my attention on adoption from Taiwan and possible differences in considerations parents may have when looking at adoption from either there or the PRC (People's Republic of China). Although some of the talk revolved around the differences in fees, with China apparently being a bit less pricey than Taiwan according to some experiences, but input from a Taiwanese-born adult adoptee... more

"It seemed ironic that I would be experiencing culture shock in the country where I was born." A Korean adoptee on returning to her birth country as an adult.

While writing about addressing this for my kids with frequent visits to Cambodia, another thought kept niggling.

I was born and raised in California. Although I traveled a good deal, California was in every way my home until I was almost... more

Culture shock in birth countries

Categories: Homeland Visits

An article from Canada about an adult adoptee from Korea and her search for birth family has me thinking this morning. Sam in Cam/©2005SHBenoiton A young women, adopted at 22-months in 1976 writes about her experiences with the transracial aspects of adoption and her feelings about being Korean.

When her mom died of cancer when she was twenty, she "ached to know" her past and her birth parents.

What were they like? Did I look like them? Why did... more
