Africa with a Seven Iron?

I'm cross-posting this on both the International Adoption Blog and the Older Parent Adoption Blog. Sorry for the repetition if you read both.

Here's the list of things Sam's decided he wants to do in Africa:
golf, play football, carry suitcases, buy toys and books.

Where any of this comes from is beyond me. A child's perspective is so removed from the adult way of looking at the world that it's as if different planets are inhabited by each species.

My world today if full of packing, details, laundry, lists and 'don't forget the__' anxieties. My vision of tomorrow anticipates new vistas, a chill in the air, monkey chatter and the smell of Africa.

Sam's, for some reason I have no way of determining, has a lot to do with golf.

A couple of days ago the Rolex World Golf Update ran, as it does every morning, during our one daily hour of CNN. Completely ignored as just part of the news (boooooooring) every other morning, that day it captured Sam's attention more effectively than an episode of "Scooby-Do" in French.

All of a sudden, I was getting requests for "some of those golf sticks", and frequent demonstrations of the perfect swing. Perhaps it's just the timing that has the Scottish sport of affluent urbanites intermingled in Sam's mind with the African veldt, but it could be something completely different that makes the connection so very clear for him.

I'm looking forward to hearing Sam's take on the new part of the globe we'll be visiting. Seeing through his eyes sometimes presents a strange new world and may offer interesting twists on what can appear standard fare. We'll know tomorrow if vistas, chills and monkeys drive the golf thoughts off the fairway and into the woods.

As for carrying suitcases, he'll be welcome to lug his own, and since to him this is part of the fun, the vacation will start with loading up the car.

I think I'll try to enjoy that part of it, too. In fact, I'm going to try to experience as much of this holiday as I can as a three-year old. Sounds like fun.

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll be blogging from Kenya. See you then!
