Cambodia: Trafficking Task Force, KR Trial and Sleaze

With this being the end of the week, it's time to wrap up the news coming out of Cambodia in the last seven days.

Starting with a BBC report about a trafficking crackdown ... the Cambodian government has launched the country's first anti-trafficking task force that is designed to take ministries, law enforcement and international agencies and tie them together in hopes of creating a clear picture of what's really happening.

With somewhere around 200 organizations and more than 5,000 people ostensibly working to stop the trade of trafficking in humans, there is little communication and much confusion, not to mention a whole lot of folks stepping al over each others' toes. Improving how law enforcement works ... police and courts have been at odds ... is also a goal.

Speaking of courts, an article in The Jurist gives a very good explanation of the new kink in the Khmer Rouge trial hold up that is rising from demands that foreign lawyers pay out $4,900 in fees to represent defendants.

And a UN human rights envoy has voice a critical reaction to the outcome of a trial which upheld the conviction of two men rights groups insist had been framed for the murder of a union leader, calling the ruling a "grave injustice" underlining a climate of "continuing impunity" in Cambodia.

Monsters and Critics has details, and ties the trial to Heng Pov, the former PP police chief whose story we've been following for months here.

Seems Pov, now serving a 25-year sentence for the murder of a senior judge and facing further counts of murder, was in charge of leading the prosecutions case against Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun, who both claim confessed under duress.

While we're on sleaze patrol, here's this week's Perv Report ...

A German, Walter Munz of Stuttgart was arrested in a PP hotel room where he was found with a 13-year-old girl, and a San Francisco Bay Area man, Michael Koklich, was convicted in a San Francisco District Court of sex with an 11-year-old while in Cambodia. I love that the noose is tightening, and now reaches across the planet to punish creeps like this.

Since we're very close to Khmer New Year, there will be more news from Cambodia posted ... same time/same place/don't touch that dial! ... on tomorrow’s international blog.
