April 23rd, 2007

I have lots of bits and pieces of information to pass along at the moment, so we’re starting the week off with those. Much of what follows is timely, so if you’re coming across this post at a time far in the future from when it was written, some information will be dated. Please visit other posts here on the International Adoption Blog and on the Older Parent Blog for more general information, some entertainment, and an opinion or two from me.

On this coming Thursday, the 26th of April the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan, in conjunction with Families with Children from China, Latin American Parents Association, Families of Russian and Ukrainian Adoption and the Ametz Adoption Program/JCCA, is hosting an event titled, “The merging identities of the adopted child: Living as a multicultural Jewish family” at the JCC facility at 76th and Amsterdam at 7pm.

The Wisconsin International Adoption Project (Waisman Center for Human Development, University of Wisconsin- Madison) and the Child Development Institute (Minnesota) are conducting a study on “emotional reactivity in international adoptees” and are looking for “study participants in the 8-9-year-old range who were adopted at 8-months or younger and spent less than 2 months in institutional care. Families from anywhere are invited, and some reimbursement for travel and accommodation will be provided. (Wisconsin: 608.262.5148 Minnesota: 612.624.9322 )

An online auction to raise money to fund an Income Generation/Prostitution Prevention Program in Cambodia is underway. Stop Exploitation Now is headed by an adoptive mom of a Cambodian-born child and does good work with kids and moms. Visit the site and learn more. They have some cool things available for bid. The auction runs through the 14th of May.

Also from the good folks at “Stop Exploitation Now!”, word of another program in Cambodia …

Kanya Massage was started up to provide employment for acid attack victims, mainly women who have had acid thrown into their faces by jealous rivals and the children who were too close to escape the horrific, disfiguring splash.

Kanya Massage was created by caring staff people at the Children’s Surgical Centre and The Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity who realized they needed to create jobs for the patients they treated who were still physically able to work. Several women who are truly survivors now work giving absolutely fabulous massages.

Reviews of the facility and the massages are all very good, and I’ll most certainly be spending some time there next time I’m in Phnom Penh!

Probably in need of a good massage, a Canadian man started walking from Vancouver, BC to the UN Building in NYC on the 6th of April to raise money and awareness.

The Walk for Family Peace” will cover 5800 kilometers (3,603 miles), and its stated purpose is:

… to raise awareness around, and focus on, the need to create healthy nurturing family environments. Although creating a healthy well functioning family requires individual commitment and effort, it also requires means and support. The intention is to create the ‘One Step Foundation’ which will a support system and make tools available to empower individuals to make the changes in their own lives that will help to bring it about.

“Be the change you wish to see.”
Gandhi.

He’s expecting to hit the Big Apple on or before the 26th of October.

Good luck and corn plasters to him!
